I started lifting weights in 1954 when I was still in college at place called Vince's gym in Los Angeles, a state of the art gym for the times with the focus on body building.
I don't know why but I loved lifting weights right from the beginning, getting that sense of becoming stronger and developing muscles that you never knew you had. I guess it was just a young guys thing but I never stopped lifting and still do today, obviously with much less weight but more reps.
The endurance that you gain from weight lifting is different from aerobic exercising. As an example I can play tennis for a much longer period of time than most of my contemporaries without resting and I do believe it's due to a combination of jogging and weight lifting. Almost every part of weight lifting helps strengthen your core or as us older guys describe it, your stomach muscles. That in turn greatly helps your balance and as we age balance is so important.
Also there are wonderful ways too do resistant exercising and not go to a gym by just going visiting your back yard or going to the local park. Pushups, dips, squats, pulllups etc. are all terrific ways to strengthen you body.
Remember keep it Simple, Consistent and Fun.
